When David informed King Saul, that he would fight the giant,Goliath, who was an experienced man of war, and David was a child, who had no war experience of any kind- he and all the people, thought David was being overconfident, and couldn't possibly win.

Excerpts from the Book of Samuel:

And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him (Goliath); thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock. And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him and slew him.

Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear. And this uncircumcised Philistine, shall be as one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.

Faith and Confidence in Action:

David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.
(David killed Goliath with his own sword, after he had fallen from the force of the stone in the sling that David hit him with.)

Therefore, David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith, And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

Persistence

After David had knocked Goliath, down onto the ground, he didn’t waste any time boasting - but finished the goal that he had set his mind to accomplish. This is the same formula that we all have to use in order to accomplish the very tough obstacles in our lives; in the class room preparing for our future, careers, and jobs, or whatever our goals may be. We can’t listen to negative advice. We have to look to the one who has the power to help us accomplish our goals. And believe in ourselves, and never stop improving. We have to continue to fight the battles until they are defeated regardless, of what they may be. For some it is poor health, or financial difficulties. And for others, it is threatening situations in their lives, that involves other issues.

David thought about all of the times God was with him and spared his life. Each day we awaken, God has protected us. Each of us has things we can draw spiritual strength from. Many people are convinced as David was in his youthful years, that having God in their lives is awesome! I totally agree.
